Apple announced the introduction of a new Cinematic API in iOS 17 at the recent WWDC 2023 developer conference, which allows third-party apps to use cinematic effects mode by calling the API.
Apple says developers can add professional-grade editing and playback features by calling the Cinematic API in their apps.
These are the same features used in apps like Final Cut Pro, Photos, and iMovie. For example, this allows your app to change the focus and aperture in your movie to create a bokeh effect.
With this mode on, Apple says the iPhone camera can record video with a shallow depth of field and shift focus softly, giving the video a cinematic quality.
After you shoot a video in Movie Effect mode, you can edit it in the Photos app on iPhone 14 models or other supported devices.
For videos shot in Cinematic mode, you can adjust the depth of field and focus of the video, in addition to the standard editing operations that apply to all videos.
The following iPhone models that support recording videos in Cinematic mode:
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
