Apple gives AirTag firmware update 2.0.24/2.0.36 changelog: support for precise search

Apple has released two firmware updates for its AirTag item tracker since November. However, the company has not previously detailed what changes these updates have brought. But some users have noticed that Apple has finally shared the updates to the latest AirTag firmware update.

Here are the changes brought by AirTag firmware updates 2.0.24 and 2.0.36.
In a support article on Apple’s website (which has not been updated on Apple’s China website), the company now details what’s new in AirTag firmware updates 2.0.24 and 2.0.36. Version 2.0.24 of the AirTag firmware, released on November 10, allows users to enable the Pinpoint Find feature, which helps locate unknown AirTags that are detected moving with the user.

This feature was announced by Apple earlier this year as part of the company’s measures to prevent people from using AirTag for tracking. When iPhone detects an unknown AirTag moving with a user, that user can use the Precision Find feature, combined with audible alerts, to quickly find and disable that AirTag.

Apple has also enhanced notification alerts when an AirTag that is separated from its owner moves with you. Some of these features require iPhone 11 or later, as they rely on the U1 chip with ultra-wideband technology.

As for AirTag firmware update 2.0.36, which was released on December 12, Apple says the update fixes an issue where the accelerometer built into AirTag may not be activated in some cases. This sensor may be used to help the iPhone detect the movement of AirTag.

Updating AirTag isn’t intuitive
Unfortunately, there is no intuitive way to update AirTag. Apple says that AirTag is automatically updated when it is in range of the iPhone. In addition, firmware updates for AirTag are rolled out in stages, so not everyone gets the update at the same time.

Users can check the firmware version of AirTag by going to the “Find My” app and clicking on the AirTag name.
