Apple users can downgrade from 16.0.2 to 15.7, Apple closed verification channel

Apple pushed the iOS 16.0.2 update (internal version number: 20A380) to iPhone users on Sept. 23. A week later, Apple closed the verification channel for iOS 16.0 and 16.0.1, meaning users who upgraded to iOS 16.0.2 will not be able to downgrade from that version to the two previous versions.

iOS 16.0.2 addresses a number of bugs affecting iPhone 14 models and other iPhones running iOS 16, including an issue that could cause the camera to shake in third-party camera apps causing blurry imaging, a fix for an issue that caused duplicate copy and paste pop-ups, and it addresses an issue that caused the display to go black during setup.

Apple iOS 16.0.1 was pushed out on September 15 for iPhone 14 / Pro Series users only. The update fixes bugs that could affect activation and migration of the new iPhone and also fixes issues related to the Enterprise and Photos apps.

Apple iOS 16 was pushed out on September 13, bringing a host of new features and improvements including a new customizable lock screen, iMessage edit undoes, support for AirPods Pro 2 headphones, and more.

However, users can still downgrade from iOS 16.0.2 to iOS 15.7, as Apple also released iOS 15.7, a version reserved for users who are temporarily reluctant to upgrade to iOS 16.

The official release of iOS 15.7 fixes security issues in Contacts, Maps, Safari, Safari Extensions, Shortcuts and WebKit, and also addresses several kernel vulnerabilities. Apple says one of these kernel vulnerabilities has been actively exploited, so users unable to update to iOS 16 should install iOS 15.7 as soon as possible, and iPad users should update to iPadOS 15.7.
