Apple AirTag helps Tennessee man recover his stolen SUV

The Apple AirTag, a beautiful coin-shaped tracker, is a rather chic piece of technology that has helped users track down their lost items in the past. Just last week, the tracker helped a Memphis man assist police in recovering his stolen SUV.

Earlier this month, Joshua Wylie decided to leave an AirTag on his SUV after his Hyundai Santa Fe was broken into. according to the police report, a criminal had tried to steal the car but was unsuccessful. Not only did they break the passenger’s window but they also managed to damage the view column.

In response, Wylie installed a security camera in his apartment window and pointed the camera’s lens at the vehicle, which captured the video of the theft. With the assistance of Memphis police, Wylie was able to recover his stolen Santa Fe thanks to AirTag’s tracking capabilities.

“If I hadn’t had AirTag to tell me where [the vehicle] was this morning, I would have probably lost thousands of dollars more in damage to my vehicle,” Wylie said.

At this point, it’s safe to say that while Apple doesn’t intend to use AirTag in this way, people have found some creative ways to make sure their tracking devices can help them keep track of lost items, sometimes, including something as valuable as a car. At the same time, however, AirTag can also be used for other malicious purposes, but these reports are not common.
