Android 14 messes with Google Pixel 6 phones, storage inaccessible after upgrade

Every time Android releases a new major version there are some bugs and problems, and Android 14 seems to be an exception to the rule, with initial reports showing that users of both the Pixel 6 and 7 are raving about the system, claiming that it improves the phone’s heat dissipation and battery life. However, some Pixel 6 owners weren’t so lucky, and while they didn’t experience issues such as overheating after installing the latest Android 14, they ran into even more trouble, with their phones experiencing storage issues, and in some cases not even being able to access the phone’s internal storage and the files stored in it.

Due to the inability to access the internal storage, some apps are also having issues as they are unable to download any data to the phone and using the Files app to free up space doesn’t work either. The phone only shows the space taken up by apps and for other categories — downloads, pictures, videos, audio and documents — the storage space taken up is shown as zero.

Some users are also experiencing random app crashes and “storage full” issues, when in fact they have plenty of free storage on their phones.

The issue seems to only affect Pixel 6 users with multiple user profiles, as The Verge’s editor Umar Shakir tried to reproduce the bug on his Pixel 6a, and while he didn’t experience the exact same problem, his phone crashed multiple times, even once with a “system interface unresponsive” error, suggesting that the bug is a bit of an issue. The fact that he didn’t experience the exact same issue, but his phone crashed multiple times, even once with a “system interface not responding” error, suggests that the bug is indeed related to multiple user profiles.

Switching to a secondary profile is said to fix the issue, but will not allow access to any of the apps or files associated with the primary profile.

Oddly enough, the issue doesn’t seem to affect Pixel 7 models. If you have multiple user profiles on your Pixel 6, avoid updating to Android 14 until Google rolls out a possible fix. Google hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue yet.
