Android 13’s market share is increasing rapidly, thanks to Samsung’s contribution

Google’s latest Android system distribution statistics show that since January, the market share of Android 13 has more than doubled.

Once upon a time, Google provided a monthly update to a web page informing developers of the percentage of Android devices running a particular version of the operating system. However, given the wide range of Android devices, not just phones/tablets, and how slow some companies are to release updates, this statistic tends to look poor when compared to Apple’s update stats. In this case, Google has moved the information to only be available within Android Studio and started to significantly reduce the frequency of updates — quarterly instead of monthly.

Android 13 was added to the chart for the first time in January, showing that the update has been rolled out to more than 5% of devices worldwide since its launch last August.

Google has now updated the chart again, and Android 13 adoption has improved a lot. According to the latest data from Google, more than 12% of Android phones and tablets are now running Android 13.

In contrast, Android 12 only appeared on the distribution map nearly a year after its release, and currently only has a penetration rate of 13.3%. All in all, Android 13 is gaining popularity faster than previous versions of Android.

Who is most responsible for this? The answer is Samsung. Samsung’s commitment to delivering the latest Android updates to its devices has helped Android 13 achieve this high penetration rate. With the launch of Android 13 and One UI 5.0, Samsung has more devices running Android 13 than any other brand. In addition to Samsung, brands such as Google, OnePlus, OPPO, and Realme are also accelerating the promotion of Android 13.

All previous Android versions have seen their market share shrink. But surprisingly, Android 11, released in 2020, still maintains a stable lead, accounting for 23.5% of the total, far exceeding the 16.5% share of Android 12 and 12L.
