AMD Ryzen Mobile’s New Naming Rules Announced

0

AMD announced the new naming rules for Ryzen processors on mobile platforms in 2023, from which you can see the series, architecture, positioning, performance level and other information corresponding to the product model at a glance, even Xiaobai can see it at a glance.

AMD’s director of product marketing, Robert Hallock, said the reasons for the realignment of the naming system are multi-faceted, including AMD’s expanding mobile processor business and product portfolio (49% shipment growth in the past two years), media and enthusiasts want to pass The model number understands the technical details behind it, non-technical users need to see the number to know the performance level, and so on.

Starting in 2023, the model of the Ryzen mobile processor is still four digits + one letter, but the meaning has changed:

The first digit represents the year the product was launched.

For example, 7 in the last four digits represents 2023, 8 represents 2024, and so on.

The second digit represents market positioning and product level.

1 corresponds to Athlon silver, 2 corresponds to Athlon gold, 3/4 corresponds to Ryzen 3, 5/6 corresponds to Ryzen 5, 7 corresponds to Ryzen 7, 8 corresponds to Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9, 9 corresponds to Ryzen 9.

This means that for a certain product series, the models will not exceed 9 models at most, and of course, they will not be used up. For example, high-performance products will not have Athlon, and low-power products will not have Ryzen 9.

The third digit represents the architecture.

1 corresponds to Zen/Zen+, 2 corresponds to Zen 2, 3 corresponds to Zen 3/Zen 3+, 4 corresponds to Zen 4, 5 corresponds to Zen 5, and so on.

The fourth digit represents the level breakdown.

Usually, it is 0 or 5, the latter is either an upgraded version of the architecture, or has higher functions/performance, for example, Zen 3 uses 0, and Zen 3+ uses 5.

The letter at the end represents the power consumption level.

For example, HX 55W+ is used for fever gaming notebooks, HS 35W is used for thin and light notebooks and all-around notebooks, U 15-28W is used for ultra-light and thin notebooks, C 15-28W is dedicated to ChromeBook, and e 9W is used for fanless systems.

Take two hypothetical model examples, such as the Ryzen 5 7640U. At a glance, it is known that it is a product in 2023, which belongs to the mainstream positioning of the Ryzen 5. It uses the Zen 4 architecture, and the TDP power consumption is only 15-28W.

Another example is the Ryzen 9 7945HX, the product in 2023, the top-level positioning of the Ryzen 9, the Zen 4 architecture, and has more functions or higher performance, with a TDP power consumption of 55W+.

Where did the H 45W series go, you might ask?

In the future, the H series will be canceled, with one exception, which will continue to exist in the Chinese mainland market, because the survey results show that mainland Chinese users have a unique preference for it, retaining H to meet user needs.

In 2023, AMD mobile platforms will have five series of products, all following this nomenclature.

Mendocino 7020 series: Zen 2 architecture for entry-level notebooks;

Barcelo-R 7030 series: Zen 3 architecture, suitable for mainstream thin and light notebooks;

Rembrandt-R 7035 series: Zen 3+ architecture, targeting high-end thin and light notebooks;

Phoenix 7040 series: Zen 4 architecture, a new platform for top-level thin and light notebooks and all-round notebooks;

Dragon Range 7045 series: Zen4 architecture, a new platform, to create a fever game book, creative book.

It can be seen that AMD has re-adjusted the naming rules of the Ryzen mobile version. The core reason is that there are more and more product lines, and multiple architectures will become the norm. Continuing the previous naming is not easy to distinguish the characteristics and performance levels of different product lines.

AMD said that the newly named products will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, but most of them will not be released until 2023, and promised that the numbering system will be used for at least five years and will not be changed arbitrarily.

In addition, the new naming is only for mobile, and there is a separate set of rules for desktop.
