AMD Ryzen 7000 will be equipped with RDNA 2 GPU

Earlier this year at Computex 2022, AMD detailed its Zen 4 architecture. The company revealed that its Ryzen 7000 series chips will all come with integrated graphics, which is a departure from the standard for Ryzen CPUs to date. Each AMD Ryzen 7000 processor will have two RDNA 2 compute units within the I/O die. This means you don’t need to buy a separate discrete GPU for display even if you don’t have an APU.

AMD has since shared performance data on the Zen 4 core itself at last month’s Ryzen 7000 launch, though it skipped details on integrated I/O die graphics during that time. The company today lifted the ban on measuring the Ryzen 7000 and details on the RDNA 2 integrated graphics processor (IGP) can now be seen.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the new RDNA 2 iGP is support for H.264 (AVC) with H.265 (HEVC) encoding, which could come in very handy on laptops, as the IGP on the I/O chip can be used for such purposes, and of course, the processor offers decoding support. AMD integrated GPUs can now also decode AV1 video, something that was hitherto missing on the Vega-based feature that was missing on the IGP.

You can view the full feature set in the following images.

Don’t expect too many surprises in terms of performance though, there will only be two CUs on the chip, with an expected clock speed of around 2.2GHz. These are not Ryzen 7000 G-series APUs (accelerated processing units), which are available for gaming, while the former can only be used for bright office work. Future processors may come with a higher number of CUs, possibly around 12, similar to the previously announced Radeon 680M mobile IGP.
