AMD’s GPUOpen group has released an updated version of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2. Its main advantages over the original FSR2, released earlier this year and open sourced over the summer, are improved image quality and “greatly reduced” artifacts around ghosting and shimmering, and FSR 2.1 is still compatible with the FSR 2.0 API.
FSR 2.1 utilizes motion vector divergence to reduce locked pixels, improves decomposition logic, and shifts some half-precision operations to full precision for better quality.
FSR 2.1 samples now also include animated textures, spark particles, smoke particles, and resources for generating reactive masks and synthetic and transparent masks. Reactive masks in particular are said to be the key to high-quality upscaling results.
AMD says game developers should find it easy to update from FSR 2.0 to FSR 2.1, especially since not much has changed in terms of the application of the API. In fact, there is already one game that supports the new version. That would be Giant Software’s Sim Farm 22.
