AMD releases Adrenaline Driver 22.12.2, fixes high power consumption issue on Windows with new RX 7900 XTX

AMD’s new RX 7900 series GPUs, specifically the XT version, are experiencing some sort of high power consumption issue. Both the 7900 XTX and XT exhibit very high power consumption in the case of video playback and multiple monitor connections.

It appears that the entire AMD GPU is activated when running these tasks, not just the media engine block and the display processing block. Or maybe there’s something wrong with the processor performance state.

Today, AMD released the latest WHQL adrenaline driver version 22.12.2, which fixes the high power consumption issue with video playback, but the high power consumption issue with multiple monitors remains.

The issues fixed in this release are.

Problems could be encountered when using Virtual Super Resolution with multi-monitor configurations.

A system crash could occur when changing display modes in a 4-monitor configuration.

When loading Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales with ray tracing settings enabled, an application crash or driver timeout could occur.

Improved power consumption during hardware-accelerated video playback, with further power efficiency improvements planned for a future release.

In the meantime, the following issues are known.

High idle power was sometimes observed when using selected high-resolution and high-refresh-rate displays.

Intermittent application crashes or driver timeouts may occur when using Radeon Super Resolution and some extended monitor configurations.

Video lag or performance degradation may be observed during gaming and video playback with some extended monitor configurations.

Stuttering may occur during the opening of Mysterious Seas 4: A Thief’s End games.

Application crashes or driver timeouts may occur when playing Valheim with the Vulkan API. Anyone who may experience these issues should choose the DirectX API as a temporary workaround.

Some virtual reality games or applications may perform below expectations.

Users can download the new 22.12.2 driver from AMD’s website.
