AMD Radeon RX 7900 Series Reference Graphics Cards Come With Hidden Temperature Sensors

Yesterday AMD released the Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards, which will be available for sale on December 13, 2022. The Radeon RX 7900XTX is priced at 7,999 yuan, and the Radeon RX 7900XT is priced at 7,399 yuan.

GamersNexus, known for its in-depth analysis of graphics card temperature and power, noticed that Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards have hidden temperature sensors.

This sensor is hidden behind the fan and enables the graphics card to measure the ambient temperature inside the case. This sensor is useful for graphics cards with Zero-Decibel Silent Technology, which is also supported on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 series, which stops the fans from spinning to 0-decibel silence when the graphics card is idle or under light use.

Without such a sensor, some graphics card components other than the GPU, such as VRM, are prone to overheating. One example is EVGA’s GeForce GTX 10-series graphics cards, which lacked this sensor, causing some components to overheat and break. The company was later forced to redesign the card, adding multiple sensors to the card.

Gamers Nexus expects AMD to make data from this sensor available to users, though the company has yet to make any official comment on the matter. It’s unclear if board partners will incorporate similar sensors into their designs, and in fact no brand other than Asus has shown off their RX 7900-series graphics cards yet.
