AMD has cancelled RDNA3 + development as performance and efficiency fall short of expectations

The Radeon RX 7900XT and Radeon RX 7900XTX graphics cards have been reviewed and used by media and consumers alike, and it has been found that their GPU performance is not up to the level advertised by AMD.

This discrepancy between marketed and measured performance has fueled speculation of a bug in the Navi 31 GPU. Multiple sources have since confirmed that AMD is developing a revised version of Navi 31, also known as RDNA3+. However, the latest news is that AMD has canceled the development of RDNA3+.

Multiple media outlets reported in November 2022 that AMD was developing a Navi 31 GPU with a clock frequency above 3.0GHz. The report also states that this revised Navi 31 GPU will be used on the Radeon RX 7990 XTX, RX 7950 XTX, and RX 7950 XT graphics card PCBs. This possible update is known as RDNA3+ in the market.

But hardware leaker @All_The_Watts said in his latest tweet that AMD has canceled RDNA3+.

The tweet stated that all RDNA3+ SKUs developed by AMD have failed to meet performance and efficiency goals, and all prototypes have been sealed.

@All_The_Watts has previously stated that both the flagship Navi 31 and the mid-range Navi 33 in the RX 7900 XT/XTX have the same hardware bug, but this bug was discovered too late to be properly dealt with. The AMD team wants a “truly comprehensive fix” in RDNA 3+.

In addition to @All_The_Watts, Paul of RedGamingTech, another reliable breaking news channel, also heard similar news from some internal sources.

However, some of Paul’s sources believe that AMD is still developing RDNA 3+, but the release time has been significantly delayed. The news also clearly stated that the mid-range Navi 33 and Navi 32 have not been affected, and AMD will soon launch related graphics cards.

The first batch of RNDA 3 graphics cards has been released for less than 2 months, and it is too early to tell whether AMD has axed RDNA3+. Only time will tell if AMD actually decides to scrap RDNA 3+ graphics cards entirely.
