AMD Announces Genoa Series EPYC Zen 4 Processor with up to 96 Cores

AMD unveiled its latest data center chips on Thursday, saying Microsoft Azure, Alphabet’s Google Cloud, and Oracle will be some of its customers.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said the fourth-generation EPYC processors, codenamed “Genoa,” offer significant performance and power efficiency improvements over previous chips. “This means lower capital expenditures, lower operating costs and lower total cost of ownership for enterprise and cloud data centers,” AMD said.

The new AMD EPYC (Skylar) processors are the fastest and most energy-efficient processors in the world, AMD said.

AMD shares soared about 14 percent after the release ended, and have been rising after hours.

After launching its first EPYC (Skylar) chip in 2017, AMD has been rapidly eating into Intel’s market share and is particularly strong in cloud services. Intel’s CEO even said outright that it would lose further to AMD in 2023, with the goal of regaining growth in 2025.

AMD’s x86 architecture-based cloud services chip market share has gradually grown from 0 in 2016 to about 29 percent last year, according to research firm IDC. “AMD is expected to stay on track and continue to build market share in public cloud deployments,” said Ashish Nadkarni, IDC data center and cloud analyst. “

The fourth generation of EPYC processors includes 14 models ranging from 16 to 96 cores, all with Zen4 architecture, as well as support for DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen 5 storage, CXL1.1+ memory expansion, significant security enhancements such as the extension of AMD Infinity Guard, and a full two-fold increase in the number of encryption keys.

AMD says the 4th generation AMD EPYC processors deliver a 2.8x performance increase while consuming 54% less power, building on the 300+ world records achieved by its predecessor, and supported by a complete software and hardware ecosystem across a wide range of workloads including database, virtualization, AI/ML, HPC and other scenarios.
