AMD and SiPearl team up to develop Arm-based exascale supercomputer

French company SiPearl announced a partnership with AMD to provide joint products for exascale supercomputers. Under the agreement, SiPearl will supply its Rhea processors, while AMD will supply its Instinct compute GPUs.

The collaboration between the two companies will include developing software compatible with Arm-based Rhea processors and evaluating the “interoperability” of AMD’s ROCm open software with SiPearl Rhea CPUs.

It is reported that AMD ROCm is an open platform near-metal software stack for the GPU field, and it is clear that SiPearl also wants to use it to program its own CPU.

SiPearl’s Rhea SoCs are primarily intended for high-performance computing (HPC) applications and contain 72 Arm Neoverse Zeus cores interconnected via a mesh network.

In addition, it features a unique memory subsystem consisting of four HBM2E memory stacks and 4/6 regular DDR5 memory. Rhea will be able to benefit from the extreme bandwidth supported by HBM2E memory and the high memory capacity supported by DDR5.

“We welcome this partnership with AMD, which will drive innovation in the HPC market over the years,” said Philippe Notton, CEO and founder of SiPearl.

"This collaboration with the world's leading AMD will further enrich our joint offering of high-performance computing microprocessors and partner acceleration solutions. It provides European supercomputer end users with a wider choice and will enable Europe to tackle our The grand challenges of our time, such as artificial intelligence, climate models, and medical research."

The SiPearl Rhea processor is currently being implemented by Open-Silicon Research, an Indian chip contract developer, and will be manufactured by TSMC using its N6 process in 2023.

Brad McCredie, corporate vice president of Data Center and Accelerated Processing at AMD, said:

"High-performance computing is at the heart of AMD; our AMD Instinct accelerators powered the first supercomputer to reach exascale speeds, and we continue to support numerous HPC installations around the world with our products ", "As the world continues to demand ever greater computing performance to drive the next discoveries that will transform our society, AMD is excited to further collaborate with SiPearl's ecosystem in Europe and together provide a clear path to meet Europe's exascale Billion supercomputing needs."
