Amazon tracks employees’ credit card records

Amazon recently sent emails to some office employees in the United States, warning them that the company is closely monitoring their office attendance and asking them to abide by the return to work policy. The move shows Amazon’s determination to enforce the rules, despite opposition from employees to the policy, which requires workers to be in the office at least three days a week.

screenshots of emails circulating on social media show that Amazon told some employees that they “currently do not meet the company’s expectations of meeting with colleagues in the office at least three days a week, even though your building is ready. Ready.” “We want you to start coming into the office three days a week or more now,” the email added, adding that many Amazon employees have complied since the policy was implemented in May, “and you can feel the surge of energy and collaboration between them.”

A poll on the email on Blind, a social platform where employees can anonymously talk about their employer, drew thousands of responses calling Amazon’s message “bullshit (BS).” Some users who identified themselves as Amazon employees expressed outrage over the emails on the platform, while others supported the company’s actions. Still, some Amazon employees claimed to have received the notice despite complying with the policy, while others said they did not receive emails from the company despite never being in the office.

Asked by CNN for comment, Amazon said, “This email was sent to employees who had swiped their card into the building on fewer than three days a week on five or more days in the past eight weeks, and three days in the past four weeks. swiped their cards into office buildings less than three days a week for weeks or more, and the building they are in has been ready for eight weeks or more.” A follow-up email acknowledged that some people may have been notified in error and urged those Contact their manager to correct the error.

More than 1,000 Amazon workers went on strike in May to protest the policy, which organizers called the company’s “rigid, one-size-fits-all” mandate.

At the start of the pandemic, tech giants were at the forefront in adopting remote work policies. Now, many companies are moving in the opposite direction. In June, Google announced plans to more strictly enforce its three-day hybrid workweek. Also in June, Meta asked its office workers to adopt a three-day in-person workweek starting in September, though, in 2020, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that by 2025, half of the company’s workforce would May work remotely. This week, Zoom, the video conferencing software company that has been synonymous with remote work during the epidemic, also announced a return to work policy, requiring employees who are close to the office to come to the office “two days a week.”
