All iPhone 14 models add a rear ambient light sensor

All four iPhone 14 models feature dual ambient light sensors for the first time, according to a list of technical specifications provided by Apple for the devices. According to TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino, all iPhone 14 models feature a new ambient light sensor on the back of the device, whereas previous iPhone models had only one ambient light sensor above the display.

The sensor helps both to adjust the display brightness and to determine the exposure parameters for the rear camera system.

In a review of the iPhone 14 Pro for Mashable, Stan Schroeder said he placed the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro-side-by-side in bright light and then immediately went into a dark room and found the 14 Pro to be more responsive in adapting to the brightness of the display, and it’s clear the new sensor played a role in that process role.

This is just one of several smaller hardware changes on the iPhone 14 model. Another change is the improved GPS accuracy on the Pro model, as it supports both L1/L5 bands for communication.
