After the success of Hong Guang Mini EV and the new Nano EV launched last year, Wuling has come up with its third electric microcar, the Air EV. This is the first EV manufactured by the SGMW joint venture. It is also the company’s first EV to be available outside of China.

Wuling announced the new model in Indonesia. This southeast Asian nation is the only country outside of China where SGMW has a stronghold. It also has a manufacturing unit here.

Air EV: Styling features

While Air EV shares some features with its predecessor, there certainly are some differences in the way this car has been designed. The Air EV looks more upscale and carries a bold style statement. This also makes it costlier than the previous two versions. One of the styling highlights is the low headlights. Also flanked at its two extremes by the two side mirrors is a horizontal bar of LED DRLLs. The car also has an upright rear end that mirrors the lighting design at the front.

Air EV: Specifications

The car would be based on the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform shared with the Hong Guang Mini EV and the Baojun KiWi EV models. It would have two wheelbase variants- one for a two-seater and one for a four-seater. The latter adds rear-quarter windows that run longer than the front ones.

A 40hp front-mounted electric motor would power the Air EV which would run on a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. The battery would allow for a range of about 300kms. The capacity of the micro EV’s battery is yet unknown.

Prices for the car in China would be 55,000 yuan for the SWB model and 65,000 yuan for the LWB model. In Indonesia, the Wuling Air EV for the 2022 G20 Summit to be held in Bali in November.
