The Indian government is reportedly preparing to increase incentives to further seek production of products such as MacBooks and iPads in India due to the success of producing iPhones in the country, according to senior sources in the Indian government. Top sources in India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said the country is considering expanding the size of the Production Incentive Initiative (PLI) for IT hardware to Rs. 200 billion from the current Rs. 735 billion to further expand Apple’s manufacturing ecosystem.
We have seen success in producing iPhones in India,” the senior source said. Currently, all of Apple’s top manufacturers, including Foxconn, Wistron and PEGATRON, are producing billions of dollars worth of smartphones. The next step for us is to produce MacBooks and other products, such as iPads, in India.”
It is reported that India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a proposal to strengthen the “production incentive program”, while the Indian Ministry of Finance and a number of other relevant ministries are considering the matter.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology senior sources also said that the current “production incentive program” is not attractive enough, and the new enhanced program will provide more financial support, will certainly prompt companies to invest and manufacture in India.
The Indian government believes that allowing brands such as Apple, HP and Dell to have a broad sourcing base in India is critical to expanding and establishing their status as “global manufacturing centers. Apple, by contrast, has been cautious about making products other than iPhones in India.
Under the proposed new program, the target segments it would support include laptops, tablets, all-in-ones and servers. The program is expected to benefit five major global players and 10 Indian champions in IT hardware manufacturing.
