Acer launches Chromebook Vero 514 with extensive use of recycled plastic

Acer has just brought a new Chromebook netbook to its Vero notebook line, claiming to offer consumers a more “environmentally conscious” purchase option. Like the line of Windows laptops, the Chromebook Vero 514 uses recycled case plastic — the body is 99 percent recyclable and the packaging is made from 90 percent recycled paper.

Acer even hinted in the press release that — if you don’t want to throw it away — you can even have part of the Chromebook’s packaging transformed into a multipurpose triangular laptop stand.

In terms of ecological footprint, Acer claims that the trackpad surface is made of 100% marine recycled plastic, while the keycaps and chassis are made of 50% / 30% post-consumer recycled plastic respectively.

Notably, the Chromebook Vero 514 is also quite serviceable and upgradeable — the standard screw design allows for easy access and replacement of storage components.

As for the screen, the Chromebook Vero 514 features a 14-inch 1080p panel. While Windows models only cover 66% of the sRGB color gamut, the new Chromebooks go up to 100%. It is complemented by Gorilla Glass protection and a choice of touchscreen SKUs.

For processors, users can choose from the Core 12 i7-1255U, i5-1235U, and i3-1215U with Xe core integrated. There is also a more entry-level Pentium Gold 8505, featuring a 1P + 4E hybrid CPU architecture design.

In terms of ports, the Chromebook Vero 514 offers dual USB-C (with support for fast charging to 50% power in 30 minutes), a USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack, and a 1080p webcam for reducing glare.
