Acer confirms server breach, hackers list 160GB of stolen data for sale

Computer maker Acer has confirmed that someone hacked into one of its servers and sold 160GB of data online claiming to be confidential Acer information.

“We recently discovered an incident of unauthorized access to our maintenance technician documentation server,” an Acer spokesperson said Tuesday, “Our investigation is still ongoing, but there is no indication that any consumer data was stored on that server.”

According to a post Monday by a hacker on the cybercrime forum BreachForums who goes by the pseudonym Kernelware, the “various confidential information” stolen from Acer totalled 160 gigabytes, including 655 directories and 2,869 files.

The material Kernelware claims to have stolen includes confidential slides and presentations, employee technical manuals, Windows image format files, binary files, back-end infrastructure data, confidential product documentation, replacement digital product keys, ISO files, Windows system deployment image files, BIOS components and ROM files.

“Honestly, there’s so much stuff in there, it would take me days to go through what was leaked haha,” Kernelware boasted.

Kernelware says he only accepts Monroe Coins as a payment method and only sells through intermediaries, telling potential buyers to make offers via private message.

Acer has not responded to questions about the nature of the stolen data or whether it verified the leaked information. Some security experts say that even if the scammers did not steal customer information, the data dump could still cause damage to Acer.
