A large number of emails from iTunes Connect about banking information were sent in error

A large number of Apple users were mistakenly sent emails about iTunes Connect billing or banking information-even if they were not iTunes Connect users. The erroneous iTunes Connect emails were sent in large numbers within a few hours on July 27, 2022. All users who received them received an apology shortly thereafter, but even the apology process went awry, and some accounts that were not affected received the wrong apology.

The warning issued by iTunes Connect concerns banking information, and users are being told that they must update their banking information in order to receive payments from iTunes Connect.

Users cannot become iTunes Connect users without knowing it, even though the service is free. Authors, musicians, and developers will choose to sign up for iTunes Connect in order to distribute their work on Apple Music, Apple Books, and the App Store.

These emails were clearly a mistake, and Apple at least tried to apologize to everyone who received them, sometimes before the original email requesting banking information arrived.

But the fact that the iTunes Connect warning is even addressed to people who may never have heard of iTunes Connect is even more serious.

Some of Apple’s back-end systems may be some ancient hybrid architectures that run on elements of different companies that Apple has acquired and that don’t seem to have evolved much further over the years.
