A Canadian man unlocks someone else’s Tesla Model 3 by mistake and drives it away

According to Insideevs, a Tesla Model 3 owner from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, recently encountered a strange thing, he was able to use his Tesla mobile app to unlock someone else’s vehicle and drive it away successfully.

The owner, Rajesh Randev, inadvertently unlocked someone else’s Tesla using the Tesla App on his own phone and drove away. He thought he was getting into his own car — because the two cars were the same model and colour and parked together — but he actually drove away in someone else’s Tesla.

Randev said he opened the door with the app, got in and drove off. After a while, he began to realize something was wrong because the car he was driving had a crack in the windshield, and he began to suspect it wasn’t his car, especially when he noticed the charger wasn’t where he usually keeps it.

Just then, he received a text message that read, “Hello Rajesh, do you drive a Tesla?” The text message came from the car’s real owner, telling Rajesh that he was driving the wrong car.

After stopping the car, Randev noticed that the car had different tires than his Model 3, so he called the person who had texted him and admitted to driving the wrong car. Miraculously, Randev was able to get into the car again and drive it to pick up his kids from school. He then met with the real owner of the car and returned it. The owner told Randev that he was able to text him because he saw a note in his Tesla with his name and phone number on it.

Randev says he doesn’t know why this could happen and why the Tesla App on his phone was able to unlock someone’s car. Randev says he has contacted Tesla and submitted video evidence, but some of his emails were returned and so far no one has contacted him.

There is speculation that the vehicle may not be locked and is in “valet parking” mode, but whether this is the case is still unknown, and as of this writing, Tesla has not officially responded to this.
