61% of Americans believe artificial intelligence poses a threat to humans

More than half of Americans believe artificial intelligence (AI) poses a threat to humans, according to an Ipsos poll released Wednesday.

The new poll shows that 61 percent of Americans believe AI poses a threat to humans, while 22 percent do not and 17 percent are unsure.

The findings come as the use of AI in education, government, healthcare and business is expanding, in part due to the explosive growth of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot.

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT last November, the race for generative AI has been heating up as companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft vie for market dominance.

This month, Warren Buffett, the “God of Stocks,” spoke about AI at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting, expressing concern about its rapid growth.

In addition to Buffett, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have also expressed concern about the potential dangers of AI.

Elon Musk’s concerns about AI even led him and a thousand other techies to sign an open letter in March calling for a moratorium on training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.

On Tuesday, Sam Alterman testified before the U.S. Congress to express his concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology and called for regulation of the technology.

In addition to the poll released Wednesday, a similar Ipsos survey conducted in April of this year showed that more than 70 percent of Americans are concerned about the potential impact of AI on jobs and society.
