2022 Q2 global notebook shipments down 15% year-on-year

Aug. 17 – Global notebook shipments fell 15 percent year-over-year in Q2 2022, according to a report released this morning by Strategy Analytics. Despite the challenges, laptop sales and average selling prices are much better than before the outbreak for all vendors, and this trend will continue.

The report notes that Chromebook shipments continued to decline, down 53 percent year-over-year, due to lower education demand in 2022. HP was hit hard again in the quarter, with its global shipments down 29 percent.

Top five global notebook shipments in 2022 Q2 were Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and Acer, with specific data published by Strategy Analytics as follows.

2022 Q2 Lenovo still maintains the first laptop market, shipments (wholesale) fell to 12.8 million units, down 17% from 15.5 million units in the same period last year, and down 11% sequentially.

HP was hit hard again in Q2 2022, with notebook shipments down 29 percent year-over-year to 10.5 million units; its market share fell below 20 percent for the second consecutive quarter, a rare market performance since Q1 2016.

Dell’s shipments were nearly flat year-over-year at 10.3 million units, down just 1 percent year-over-year to close in on second-place HP; its market share rose 3 percentage points to 19 percent, outperforming the market.

Apple MacOS barely outperformed the overall market due to tight supply in the quarter; MacBook shipments were 4.8 million units, down 13 percent from Q2 2021 and down 21 percent from Q1 2022.

Acer maintained its fifth position globally in Q2 2022, with its market share stable at 8 percent and shipments of 4.4 million, down 16 percent year-over-year.
