2022 First half of China smartphone SoC terminal shipments of about 134 million units, down about 16.9% year-on-year

August 9, according to CINNO Research data, 2022 first half of China’s smartphone SoC terminal shipments of about 134 million units, down about 16.9% year-on-year, of which, ZTE and MediaTek to achieve positive year-on-year growth, due to the low base, ZTE year-on-year growth of about 38%, the largest positive year-on-year growth of the brand.

At the same time, Hesse year-on-year decline of about 81.5%, the largest year-on-year decline. 2022 first half of the domestic market cell phone demand fell sharply, its will profoundly affect the upstream supply chain, cell phone SoC will be the first seriously affected components.

From June’s data, China’s smartphone SoC terminal shipments rebounded to about 23.2 million units, an increase of about 21.3% YoY, with MediaTek, Qualcomm, Apple and Hysis all increasing by more than 20% YoY. However, year-over-year, total terminal shipments still fell by about 18.6%, with only MediaTek achieving positive year-over-year growth.

In terms of brand share of smartphone SoC shipments in China, MediaTek accounted for about 43.8% in June 2022, down about 0.3 percentage points sequentially, Qualcomm accounted for about 34.3%, up about 0.4 percentage points sequentially, and Apple accounted for about 16.9%, up about 1.1 percentage points sequentially.

As can be seen, in terms of brand competition in China’s smartphone SoC market, the terminal shipments of the TOP3 brands in China’s smartphone SoC market accounted for over 95% of the total in June 2022, an increase of over 10 percentage points from June 2021, indicating that the oligopoly competition in China’s smartphone SoC market has further intensified.

Broken down into different price segments to analyze the terminal level, in June in China’s low-end smartphone market within 2000 yuan MediaTek accounted for the largest share of about 65.3%, an increase of about 19 percentage points; in the 2000-3999 yuan mid-range smartphone market Qualcomm accounted for the largest share of about 49.2%, an increase of about 5 percentage points; in the 4000-5999 yuan and 6000 yuan or more In the high-end and ultra-high-end smartphone market, Apple accounted for the largest share of 70.1% and 77% respectively, of which, respectively, increased by about 49 percentage points and decreased by about 4 percentage points year-on-year.

From the Q2 data, the terminal consumer market fell into a slump and smartphone sales were low. China’s smartphone SoC terminal shipments were about 59.9 million units, down about 19.4% sequentially and 19.9% year-over-year, with Huawei’s Hysys down 40.5% sequentially and 80.4% year-over-year.

In the second quarter, against the backdrop of shrinking smartphone SoC terminal shipments in China, MediaTek’s market share further increased to 43.3%, up about 8 percentage points year-over-year, Qualcomm’s share was about 34.5%, down about 1 percentage point year-over-year, and Apple’s share was about 16.6%, up about 3 percentage points year-over-year.

In the second quarter, MediaTek had the largest share in the low-end smartphone market within RMB 2,000 (64.8%), Qualcomm had the largest share in the mid-range smartphone market between RMB 2,000 and 3,999 (51.8%), and Apple had the largest share in the high-end and ultra-high-end smartphone markets between RMB 4,000 and 5,999 and above RMB 6,000 (69.3% and 74.9%), respectively. 69.3% and 74.9% respectively.

According to the analysis of SoC shipment data in June and Q2, MediaTek is still holding steady in the entry and mid-range markets, while Qualcomm is relatively stable in the mid-range and mid-high-end markets, while the mid-range and high-end markets are strongly dominated by Apple.

In the first half of 2022, China’s smartphone SoC terminal shipment market, MediaTek accounted for about 42.1%, an increase of about 7 percentage points, located in the first; Qualcomm accounted for about 35.3%, an increase of about 2 percentage points, located in the second; Apple accounted for about 16.3%, an increase of about 2 percentage points, located in the third, in the top five brands, only Huawei Heisi market share fell year-on-year In the top five brands, only Huawei Heisi market share declined year-on-year.

CINNO Research observed that due to the first half of the cell phone terminal demand depression, resulting in smartphone SoC shipments suffered, is expected to ship the second half of the performance or better than the first half, mainly due to the effective control of the domestic epidemic, the suppressed consumer demand was released. In addition, with the second half of the year MediaTek Tiangui chip stable shipments, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 + Gen1 for TSMC 4nm foundry to obtain a better power consumption ratio, coupled with Apple A16 chip will soon be unveiled, predicted MediaTek / Qualcomm / Apple “two super a strong” oligarchy pattern increasingly strengthened.
