17 CPU frequency conversion speed measured: AMD Zen 3 is faster

According to foreign tech media Chips and Cheese’s tests on 17 processors of different brands and architectures (including mobile SoCs), AMD’s Zen 3 architecture is found to tune the clock frequency (within the range of low frequency at idle and high frequency at runtime) at an extremely fast rate, which is especially evident in mobile SoCs.

One interesting finding based on the test results is that the Ryzen 7 5800U “Zen 3” mobile processor clocks up even faster than mobile chips equipped in handheld devices (such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821), with the former taking 1.6 milliseconds to change compared to 19.6 milliseconds for the latter.

From the test results, we can see why AMD likes its processors to run separate from Windows internal power management’s 10-millisecond tick rate (the rate at which the operating system reports its workload to the processor), so it can respond with a higher performance state. The rapid ramp-up of the clock ramp allows the processor to better allocate its power budget to respond to workloads.
