15 potential names for Apple’s macOS 14 system revealed

Apple is expected to officially announce macOS 14 at WWDC 2023. According to a new tweet from Vox Media product manager Parker Ortolani, Apple may choose one of the following 15 trademarked names for macOS 14.

Ortolani accurately predicted in 2021 that Apple would name macOS 12 Monterey, and in his latest tweet, he lists 15 names that Apple has registered but has yet to use.

The list below:

  • Diablo
  • Condor
  • Tiburon
  • Farallon
  • Miramar
  • Rincon
  • Pacific
  • Redwood
  • Shasta
  • Grizzly
  • Skyline
  • Redtail
  • Sonoma
  • Sequoia
  • Mammoth

Not yet used.

Already used:

  • Ventura
  • Monterey
  • Big Sur
  • Catalina
  • Mojave
  • High Sierra
  • Sierra
  • El Capitan
  • Yosemite
  • Mavericks

9to5Mac believes that macOS 14 is not a big update, so it is unlikely that it will be called Mammoth, Sequoia, Redwood, Condor, Grizzly and Diablo.

So the following nine names are likely to be chosen:

Farallon – meaning headland, outcrop or rocky peak

  • Miramar – to see the sea
  • Rincon – a corner
  • Pacific – peaceful in nature
  • Shasta – teacher
  • Skyline – the outline of land/buildings
  • Redtail – usually associated with a red-tailed hawk
  • Sonoma- Valley of the Moon
  • Tiburon – shark
